The Textures of Africa

Africa is often visually represented through a wide lens – expansive plains, seemingly endless bodies of water, vast deserts, deep gullies and dense jungles.

The continent’s grandeur is undeniable. However, an element often missed in this representation is the rich and omnipresent tapestry of textures; all of which offer a new and unexpected perspective on its natural beauty. When admired in this conscious way, Africa becomes even more awe-inspiring.

The different textures bring with them a majestic colour palette; consider the vibrant red sands of Namibia, the stark white salt pans of Botswana’s Makgadikgadi, the lush and sensual greens of Congo’s rainforests and the savannahs of the Serengeti. Sand, stone, bark, leaves and waterways combine in a rich and complex palimpsest which only deepens the experience.

Witnessing the timelessness of these textures, some of which have existed for millions of years, adds a profound sense of connection to the earth. These landscapes and the elements within them, built up slowly over time, represent ancient and untamed wildernesses, untouched by human hands, in a way that few places are today.

We hope this newsletter encourages you to look closer and appreciate the intricate textures that make up Africa’s landscapes and natural inhabitants.
