Laikipia: A great place for multi-generational travel

At AMADI we like to do family holidays and multi-generational trips a little differently. I know that, at times, it can be challenging to meet the contrasting needs of different age groups, activity levels and accommodation preferences. Today, I’d like to put the spotlight on one particular region that solves these problems and which, in my opinion, offers an unparalleled experience for families; Kenya’s Laikipia region.

Ol Jogi landscape

Situated in the heart of the country, Laikipia offers breathtaking views of Africa’s second-highest peak, Mount Kenya. With its iconic rolling hills, the region is not only visually stunning in terms of natural beauty, but also rich in wildlife, boasting the second-highest density of animals in Kenya. Laikipia has become a hub for conservation, with numerous projects led by both government and private entities. Notably, it is home to East Africa’s largest rhino sanctuary, an inspiring project which has led to the creation of a protected area that now spans multiple private conservancies.

What makes Laikipia truly unique is its central location, which allows easy access to a large amount of destinations via quick and easy flights from one base. Although short in duration, the difference in landscapes throughout time in the air is extraordinary; a helicopter ride up the Great Rift Valley allows you to witness seemingly ever-changing landscapes below. This diversity of landscape approachable from one central hub is unique throughout the continent.

With this diverse scenery comes a diverse range of activities; there is truly something for everyone, whatever their interests. Examples include fly-camping under the stars, horse riding through the wilderness, game drives, learning more about innovative conservation initiatives and visiting community-led elephant sanctuaries. With the use of a charter plane, day trips include deep sea fishing on the Kenyan coast or visiting the Maasai Mara. For these reasons, a stay of seven days can feel as if you have been on the continent for weeks.

Lengishu Wildlife

Another unique element of Laikipia as a destination is the accommodation on offer. Known as a place for families to build beautiful homes in which to spend time with loved ones, some of these stunning private houses are now available to rent on an exclusive-use basis. Due to their non-commercial beginnings, they don’t feel like lodges but true homes, because that is what they truly are. Incredibly comfortable, very private and with plenty of space for everyone, an exclusive-use home is an ideal accommodation option for those travelling as families or groups.

Relax at Arijiju

The joy of staying as a family in one of these homes is that you can spend a full week in one place without the need to pack, unpack, travel and fly, much of which is what can feel challenging when travelling as a family. Instead, due to the diversity of the experiences and landscapes on offer from one base, families can enjoy restful breaks which include plenty of time to relax and recharge, and spend quality time together.

Some of our favourite homes in the area – all of which work for a stay of around a week – include Ol Jogi, Segera, Arijiju, Sirai House, Lengishu, Laragai House and Enasoit.
