Advantages of Shoulder Season Travel

Travel to Africa is often associated with peak seasons and iconic migrations, periods when you ‘must’ travel. However, the continent has always been, and remains, a place to visit year-round, offering incredible experiences whatever month you choose to travel. More than this, at AMADI we really believe that there is a lot to be gained by travelling specifically outside the normal seasons.

Ultimately, everyone should travel when they can, and there are plenty of advantages to doing so at traditional times of the year. However, while the high season in specific locations has its advantages, exploring certain destinations during shoulder or even off-season can unveil a different, often more intimate side of its landscapes and wildlife.

When the crowds thin out, a new type of adventure awaits, one where the focus shifts from following well-trodden paths to discovering lesser-known but equally captivating moments. For those who appreciate flexibility and a deeper connection with nature, navigating the seasons can unlock unique and unforgettable experiences.

A great example of this is The Great Migration. Witnessing this natural phenomenon between July and September as it crosses the iconic rivers of the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara is nothing short of breathtaking – a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, following the migration to the southern Serengeti during calving season in February or March offers a completely different perspective. Alternatively, staying in the northern Serengeti or Masai Mara once the migration has moved on reveals a tranquil wilderness, teeming with resident wildlife and free from the usual crowds.

Consider venturing off the beaten path in Southern Africa – Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – during the ‘champagne months’ of April and May. Post-rainy season, the landscape is rejuvenated, lush, and brimming with vibrant colours. While game viewing might not be at its peak, the stunning scenery and serene atmosphere more than compensate. This is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the calm and tranquillity of incredible natural beauty, something that can go unnoticed in the more popular months.

For us, the key is not to avoid the high season, but to recognize the value in timing your travels to make the most of the continent’s diverse, and seemingly endless offerings. For those with the flexibility to choose, navigating some of our favourite destinations during the shoulder season can allow for a deeper, more fulfilling experience.
