Not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Congo or Congo-Brazzaville lies on the Atlantic Ocean northwest of the River Congo. The capital Brazzaville is a colourful blend of authenticity. Explore the markets, visit the turquoise-tiled Basilique Sainte-Anne and admire the fashion excesses of the ‘Congo Sapeurs’. In the north of the country, a true wilderness awaits in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park; a hidden gem, characterised by lush rainforests and vast open swamps.
Although the park is expansive, there are only a handful of accommodation options and the sole purpose remains to conserve its biodiversity. A highlight is lowland gorilla trekking, a one-of-a-kind experience. Up to 80% of the country is covered by the Congo rainforest with numerous smaller parks dedicated to their protection and that of the unique species of forest elephants, buffalos, hyenas and birds that live in them.
